The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
