Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
