Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
