The English and Wales Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

The Irish and Scotland also share a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
