Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain decisions made by the official, following the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
